I think this was from last year’s ChiSeries Toronto. Or it was SPCS?

I’ll have a more in depth post about last night’s ChiSeries Toronto reading next week, but as this is being posted, I’ll be on the road, guzzling coffee. That’s the weird thing that happens when you have an event the day before a blog post day. I could possibly stay up late and write the post for the morning, or I could push the post back. I could even just guess at how everything will go and write the thing as if that’s what went down, but I won’t. I’ll do this instead. I’m going to vaguely write some stuff about it and save the real post for when I can sit down and appropriately convey the essence of the event. I can tell you that I am super excited for another Toronto reading, especially with the ChiZine folks. As it stands, though, I am unsure of how the reading went.

Toronto, I Hardly Knew Ye

Blog No. 285

31939771_1666252800089753_277368725982674944_nThe list of events is dwindling rapidly, but boy, has it been worth it! I’m not going to lie. While rushing to try to get The Thinking Machine released, the long list of events was a miasma of promise and stress. Now that I’m down to three left and I’ve sold more than half of the initial run of The Thinking Machine, I’m feeling pretty good. I may even have to order more copies by the end of the month. That does mean another big dump of cash, but if I’m at that point, I should be close to getting back what I spent on the first batch. My only big concern about that is saturating the market, but Cristian and I sold a good 800 – 900 copies of No Light Tomorrow over its run, so I still have some ways to go before I max out on Thinking Machine. Just having some solid sales at the last few events has been encouraging, though. Most were sold at Shock Stock, but I did manage to get a few sold at the Biblioasis reading. Blog No. 272

Last weekend I was in Toronto and everything changed. Or, some things slightly changed, but since I thought I had a really good handle on things this year, it feels more momentous that it really is. I intended to start the second novella this month, but I have yet to start. I figured I’d have the train trip up and back, some time in Toronto while Arvin works, and The train trip back. I even booked business class for the trip home, in hopes the extra space and nice large table would make work easier. As it turns out, the paddy_the_pelicantrays on the new economy class are pretty good. I got a lot done on the way to Toronto. Unfortunately, I spent the time working on layout (but for The Thinking Machine at least) and Flags and High Fives. I really wanted to be farther along with Thinking Machine than I realize I am, so the next novella is starting more slowly than expected. Continue reading “Back Home”

Toronto Bound

Blog No. 271

tetris-veryfirstversionTomorrow morning I’m getting on a train and heading up to Toronto to meet up with Arvin and get to work on Season Two of Flags and High Fives. We’re doing things a little differently this year, and that means I have a lot of stuff to bring up so we can get started. Since I’m taking the train (a sensible option in the winter) that means I’m going to have to sharpen my Tetris skills and rely on some muscles to get everything into a backpack and suitcase, and get them onto the train. I think that should be the most difficult part (except maybe getting it all into a cab when I get there). Continue reading “Toronto Bound”

Descending the Mountain or Toronto Bound

Blog No. 221

giphyThe First Annual Adventure Worlds Press Summit is over, and I have no idea if it was a success or not. I know I had fun, got to talk shop with Christian and Joey, and had a really good laugh at an old episode of Small Wonder during a dinner break, but I can’t quite quantify the level of success. In the last few years, when the summit was just a retreat, I could do a simple word count and say that reaching seven thousand word in three days was pretty good. This year, my main focus was editing and planning. I got some writing in (four thousand words or so) but all of the second day (the biggest chunk) was spent on finishing the second draft of my crime novella. I did finish it, and even had time that evening to write, but editing that large a story is still a new thing, so measuring how well I did is new too. Bookapalooza!

Blog No. 209

img_20161118_152214220I love road trips. Even taking a two-hour jaunt to London (Ontario) for a day sounds like a good idea for me. I love driving, I’m cool being a co-pilot, and I’ll even rock the back seat. I just enjoy the trip. Not sure if it’s the movement, or the moving, or what, but it’s a good time. Bookapalooza was my second out-of-town event ever and (it being in Whitby) the furthest one to boot. Needless to say, I was looking forward to the trip (even if I had to share a room with Christian). Day of Kings

Blog No. 189

13516203_10153743495720983_7085526552815543252_nOver the last few years (around the same time I’ve been working with Adventure Worlds) I’ve had the rare opportunity to see some of my favourite bands live. Due to my extreme age, many of them have since left whatever spotlight they may have had (some of them even haven broken up). Three of the most notable experiences have been seeing Mystery Machine at the FM lounge (now any empty space), going to Hamilton to see the Killjoys play a reunion show on New Year’s Eve, and  now I get to add going to Toronto to see Limblifter. It’s no coincidence that all three bands are Canadian alternative Rock. It’s also no coincidence that I saw all three shows with my musician brother. (Not to mention how awesome all three concerts were). Continue reading “Day of Kings”

Dinosaurs and Pirates

Blog No. 186

IMG_20160614_120708Last weekend was my Birthday. Since I had the weekend off (it’s the slow time at work) I decided to see if my friend (whose birthday is a few days before mine, making him old) was free for me to go and visit. Many moons ago, when we were both in high school, we often had a double birthday bash. It was much easier back then because we lived in the same city, had the same group of friends, and both of us were childless and unmarried. It’s a bit challenging when he has moved to Toronto, has a wife, and is raising his six-month-old child. Challenging, but not impossible. Continue reading “Dinosaurs and Pirates”

Escape!

Blog No. 143

There I was, locked in a room with my friend and four strangers. The key was hidden somewhere beyond a locked door and we had to find the combination. We split up the room and started tearing it apart looking for clues. Nothing was spared. Tables were upturned, stools were disassembled, carpets were pulled violently away. Within minutes we had the room in shambles. Nothing was untouched. Gathering in the middle of the room, we righted a table and split all our collected items onto it, searching for patterns and connections. With the makings of a plan, some astute perception, and lots more looking, we were able to use the puzzles to unlock more clues to more puzzles. Ideas were rapidly created, attempted, and discarded, and when all hope seemed lost, we found the code to the locked room. Inside there was another lock, more clues, and no hope. Our time ran out and the game was over. Continue reading “Escape!”

Crazy Christmas Capers

Blog No. 110

I’m writing this one on Christmas Eve. I am one of those people who celebrate the day, so things have been very busy. Even in a regular holiday season, time and money gets tight. This year, Christmas is followed by my friend’s wedding. I’m the best man, so my duties are piling up a bit. I’m happy to do it, but I would recommend that anyone looking to get married in the latter half of December take that into account. I have to travel, write a speech, get my suit and shoes, make a playlist for the after party, pack, and something else I am going to forget until the last minute. Right now I’m putting off wrapping presents (because it’s not fun). It’s busy.
