Revenge of the Day Job

Blog Post No. 484

jdwitk9The end is near for the fifth and final novella, Snow from a Distant Sky. As I mentioned last week, I’m waiting on a few edits to come in before getting started on the layout. The cover is currently being designed and drawn by the great Glen Hawkes, too. (I can’t wait to share it). As soon as I get those edits in, I have to go over them, do a final once over for myself, then the out-loud read before putting it all together and sending it off to the printers. The book may come out in the first or second week of April, depending on how the sample copies turn out. Continue reading “Revenge of the Day Job”

The Oddity of a Virtual Launch

Blog Post No. 405

indyswap_4458The virtual launch is over and while I did very little to facilitate it (or likely because) it was a success. Though I’m not sure how to quantify a success of such a thing. At a physical event you can count of number of people who showed up and how many books you sold. I suppose I could go by views, but with so many different elements spread out over multiple digital spaces, that’s not so easy. I could go by engagement and I did get some good feedback on the silly video I made for the event, but again, I’d have to go around and calculate the comments on all the posts and I don’t want to. The easiest and most kind to my ego is to look at the things Christian, Brittni, and I did for the event. Continue reading “The Oddity of a Virtual Launch”

Stories that Stay with Me – Two

Blog No. 396

tumblr_nvcg9yzycw1sh05g3o1_500Back when I was in high school, I got into the habit of spending hot summer days in the basement sitting on an old couch and watching movies on my parent’s first VCR. It was a huge grey beast that cost them something like a thousand dollars when they bought it. Years later it was relegated to the basement with the same old TV from the blog I wrote about watching Aliens with my dad. My parents also had a huge library of tapes (several hundred at one point) and I had many of my own. I would sit on the couch, running to the chest freezer to grab popsicles or freezies and watch movie after movie. One day I watched Blade Runner. I don’t think it was the first time, but for some reason, that watch had more impact than the others. I was in the habit of watching the credits back then, and at the end of the list of names and titles was a line of text that said the movie was based on the book, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep by Philip K. Dick. Continue reading “Stories that Stay with Me – Two”

Minimums

Blog No. 390

orderlyincompletehoki-size_restrictedHere we are again, dear reader. It’s a new week and if I’ve been able to continue as well as I started, I’ll be feeling good about my progress (remember I write these on Tuesday even now that I’m at home and really I have all the time in the world to write posts on Thursday or even Wednesday night, but I don’t want to break my habit). Not just with the writing, either. After a less than productive weekend, I had a bit of a reset. It happens from time to time. I’ll do well, keeping on top of things, then I’ll hit a wall or get worn out and then things fall apart for a few days. Then I pick myself back up and try again. Sometimes it’s a matter of days and weeks, sometimes months. It’s the same kind of thing I’ve been struggling with over the years with the summer slump. Continue reading “Minimums”

Daily Life

Blog No. 362

gallery-1426864304-screen-shot-2015-03-20-at-110459-amI’ve been working on a second draft of Broadcast Wasteland, but it’s been a pretty slow pace. I’m not overly motivated to work on it every day like I was for the first draft. That’s not to say I haven’t been putting in some time. Right now it’s split between finding a passage to read for the Biblioasis event (which was last night. Sorry if you missed it) doing the second draft, and trying to get that review finished for my friend. That’s not a terrible amount of work, but things at the day job have been hectic and stressful. October was a super busy month (the hall where I work was open every day) and with the new systems in place, we all had to make adjustments to the way we do everything. (It’s all a little slap in the face). Continue reading “Daily Life”

One Down, Infinity to Go

Blog No. 325

maxresdefaultThe Guelph GenreCon is done, and I’m going to talk about it (here, in just a few sentences) but I want to start with tomorrow’s reading! It’s tomorrow! I’m really excited about this one, even though I was overwhelmed with all kind of things running up to it (some also exciting like GenreCon and some really stupid). Either way, I feel like it was partially in cruise-control and partially being steered by Christian while I was running around, waving my arms, as if I were on fire. Then, in the last moment, when the other stuff calmed down and the reality sinking in that this reading was just days away, I started to focus and get to work. By then, there wasn’t much more to do. I’ve practiced my reading, made some facebook posts, and delivered some copies of Thinking Machine to Biblioasis. Not much more to do before tomorrow, now. One last thing about tomorrow’s reading. You should go. It’s got Elly Blake, Brittni Brinn, Christian (if you like that sort of thing) and me! And it’s in a really cool place and we will have coffee and timbits. It Begins… Event-a-Palooza 2019

Blog No. 324

20190203_142552I’ve already had a workshop this year (thanks to Vanessa over at Gertrude’s Writing Room) and I’ve even had an interview (also thanks to Vanessa and the good folks at Scribes and Songsters). I’ have yet to have a traditional event such as a convention or reading. All that is about to change—starting this weekend. I’m heading up to Guelph with Christian for GenreCon. I haven’t been to Guelph since a couple of my friends were living there. I went up for St. Patrick’s Day and had a wonderful time. That was years ago now. I have been as close as Kitchener for book related stuff, but this will be a new city for an event. Hopefully it’s going to be a good one. Continue reading “It Begins… Event-a-Palooza 2019”

Last ChiSeries of 2018 – The Best of the Best of the Best!

Blog No. 314

20181128_210601The last ChiSeries Windsor of the year took place last night. I’d like to say it was a smashing success, but (as I’ve said before) I write these blog posts early, for a number of reasons, and I don’t know how it went yet. I’m pretty nervous. Christian and I put a lot into this one (both time and some money) so I hope that the low numbers on the event page and the severe lack of people signed up to read were inaccurate indicators of what to expect. I hope we filled Phog to the brim and had so many people to read that we had to cut it short. I hope that all the extra effort, the time volunteered by the people we roped in to be judges, and the bumping of a regular Wednesday night musicians was worth it and we had the best ChiSeries Windsor yet! As I write this, I do not think that will be the case. Continue reading “Last ChiSeries of 2018 – The Best of the Best of the Best!”

Last Minute Reading 2 and What’s a Blog Tour

Blog No. 294

ew2wh4zI’ve been doing this blog for a number of years now, and I’ve never been part of a blog tour (or blog share, or whatever). I did have a guest post at one time, but it wasn’t what I had in mind, and the particular person doesn’t do much posting anymore. Given the number of authors I know who do have active blogs, I’m surprised it’s taken me this long to try again. I suppose part of it has to do with my obsessive need to not play well with others, but I genuinely like these folks and while they may not all write the kind of stuff I fancy, they are very good at what they do. (Just because a book isn’t your type of genre, doesn’t mean you can’t appreciate how well written it is). For the next four weeks (starting next week) I’m going to be featuring one of these authors and one of their works. The group came up with some formats for the posts, but I like to be difficult, so I’m doing kind of whatever comes to me in the moment. I hope they like it (and you, obviously). Last Minute Event!

Blog No. 293

IMG_20161127_150733235Over the last few years (I just realized about seven) Christian and I have formed a pretty good partnership. So much so that folks who don’t know he is married with kids often think we are a couple. We’ve learned to just go with it, but that’s not what this is about. While we plan, host, and attend a lot of events together, we sometimes do things that the other person can’t (or doesn’t want to on the rare occasion). It’s unbelievable, I know, but it happens. One of those things is the Windsor International Writer’s Conference. It’s an event that has been put on for the last few years that brings authors, publishers, and agents to the city for one busy weekend. This time, Christian is the one involved and I didn’t have time to participate (plus I wasn’t asked, but it saves me having to politely decline). Continue reading “Last Minute Event!”
