Holiday Season

Blog Post No. 474

presentsIt’s hard to not write a post about the holidays, especially since this post is coming out just days before Christmas (which is the holiday I celebrate each year). Writing a seasonal post is becoming a bit of a tradition (like my little birthday and yearly look forward and back posts). I try to keep things interesting, especially with repeat type posts like this one. There is only so much to say about the end of the year holidays and I may have said it all, already. But, let’s see if I have anything new to add. Continue reading “Holiday Season”

Ghosts of Halloween Past

Blog post No. 467

knoebels-hallo-fun-sign_54_990x660I have a terrible memory. Which is funny since a lot of my posts over the last few years have been about me looking back on my past. But really, outside of a general vague sense of my childhood, I have a handful of vivid memories that stand out. For some reason (or several reasons more likely) a number of those memories are about Halloween. Sure, Halloween is over, but I’m on a roll with these posts about my personal past and I hate how the minute November starts it’s somehow Christmas season already. So I’m dragging my feet and trying to keep October alive for one more week. The biggest reason is likely that I love the holiday. I’ve loved it ever since I was a child. It was like Christmas but without the obligations. Halloween is a real holiday for kids (and drunken adults, I suppose). Continue reading “Ghosts of Halloween Past”

2021

Blog Post No. 423

giphy-2Welcome to the last post of 2020. This is when I traditionally write about my plans for next year. Before I got started, I went back and read over my last post of 2019. Wow, I was way off with my predictions there. (Don’t go back and read it because I make a joke that hits way too close to home with how 2020 turned out). But, this is a post about the future, not the past. I save that for the true end of the year for this page, the closest Thursday to January 10th. Though the world and our interpersonal relations have been strange, I hope that most people had a little bit of joy in whatever celebrations they take part in this time of year. Personally, I missed the usual mix of hectic visits and lazy family time. Usually my brother and I spend the afternoon at my parent’s house exchanging gifts, playing billiards, and just enjoying each other’s company. It’s challenging enough that my other brother and his family are far away and we can’t see each other for Christmas, but only being able to see my parents digitally was tough. And I’m not a very personable person. I imagine it was much more difficult for others. Continue reading “2021”

Christmas Eve

Blog Post No. 422

7899c6d913b9052627eed2ec2f2a91c4As a child, Christmas was a magical time. I distinctly remember staring at the clock, waiting for it to be early enough for me to get out of bed and go dig through my stocking while my parents somehow pulled themselves out of bed and got ready for the day. (I say somehow from the perspective as an adult now looking back). I always had trouble sleeping. Many nights little Ben would sit up in his bed quietly playing with stuffed animals or listening to tapes on his Realistic tape recorder. (I spent too much time looking for the exact model and I think it was this Radio Shack one). On Christmas nights, I don’t think I slept at all. Continue reading “Christmas Eve”

Eight Days

Blog No. 369

eightcrazynightsNo, I’m not talking about Hanukkah. For those who are celebrating next week, I hope it’s great. For me, the next eight days are my time off. Every year between Christmas and the New Year, my day job is closed. The actual dates fluctuate and since we are a rental facility, there are always a few shifts during that period, but, we are closed for the regular staffed hours. This year, we are closed from the 25th to the 2nd (the 2nd is our de-decorating shift). I have from tomorrow until the 28th before I have to go back. There’s Christmas in there and I’m definitely going to take at least one day to do nothing but play video games with my brother, but the rest of the time is free to work. The Holidays

Blog No. 317

20181214_174640-1Last week I was invited to a last minute event at Biblioasis, which was my last event of the year. I wasn’t expecting anything, but they asked me a few days beforehand if I would come to a Holiday Schmoozer with other local authors to be on hand to sign books and what have you. There were some other authors expected and our books were put on a little display table, but the crowd was mostly made up of other authors, too. Not to say that it wasn’t a good time. I just happened to not really be a draw for the store. Some books sold that night, but none of them were mine. I’m not too disappointed. I didn’t have much invested other than time, and I spent my time successfully Schmoozing, so things worked out just fine. I even got one of Biblioasis’ cool Christmas Ghost Stories for taking part. I’m going to call it a win. Continue reading “The Holidays”

Drowning in the Day Job

Blog No. 315

dont-quit-your-day-job-chief-haha-ver-that-is-7349853After a less than stellar summer of writing, I managed to pick things up over the last few months. Christian and I were both coming to the end of our individual projects, so we made an effort to get together when we could and work. I managed to get the first draft of Neon Heart done that way. I put that aside for a few weeks in order to start my novel and give myself some time and space from the novella so I can be very critical when I went back to it. I intended to hit it hard starting on December first (putting the novel aside for the month and getting back to it in the new year. The problem with that plan is that, not only am I really lazy, but the day job decided that I shouldn’t be aloud to do anything but work there (and suffer). One Last Event for the Year

Blog No. 263

24129987_1711334505564763_8249282984408954501_nDid you know it’s already December? It took me by surprise. Christmas is three weeks away. Thankfully I am just about done everything I need to do for that. (One present to go. It’s been a bit of a challenge to track down). Even though the book is out (The new Crime Anthology, All These Crooked Streets) the launch is over, and the ChiSeries is done for the year, I haven’t had a chance to take a break. That is, I have so much work still to do that I shouldn’t have blown off most of last weekend (which I did) because the Day Job continues to sap every ounce of my energy. But that’s as lame an excuse as I’ve heard, so I’ll just say I slacked off even with a bunch of pressing deadlines quickly approaching with the end of the year close behind. Surviving Christmas

Blog No. 213

6a00e54f0fa079883401bb07b11155970dSo, Christmas is imminent. It’s a couple days away, and there is nothing I can do to stop it. At this point, there isn’t much point in trying. Most of the crap stuff is over and the actual day isn’t the issue (for me). I quite like spending time with my family, and Christmas is as good a time as any. Plus, I get fed like a champ and get to hang out with my nephew. Never not good. Before I get too far into this post, I want to point out that I have no intention of trivializing those who actually suffer over the holidays. I’m actually a pretty happy guy who has a close, supporting, loving family. While there are parts of Christmas that drive my crazy, I’ve really got it easy. Continue reading “Surviving Christmas”

Christmas Miracle

Blog No. 161

So Christmas Eve happens to fall on my post date. How about that? Because of the assumed busyness everyone is experiencing (I hope) I’ll keep it short and sweet.

Over the last few months, I’ve been working very hard (though not as hard as I could be working I suppose). The stories for No Light Tomorrow were written, but the process of taking the first drafts and putting them into a finished book is long and harrowing. Editing took its toll. It’s not always easy to be shown your mistakes over and over again, but it ends up with much cleaner stories. We went through a few layers of editing, culminating with sending the stories away to a professional who took our carefully written and rewritten stories and shredded them. They were fixed and a last loving look from Christian for my stories, and me for his, brought them to their final versions.

When they were finally done, the layout began. While I have limited experience, I wasn’t ready for what awaited me. Reading tutorials, searching for how to’s, and trial and error eventually ended in a final layout. Sending that layout to the printers resulted in having to make changes, but after learning what I had, it wasn’t as big a job.

After that, we were done. The proofs came back, some last minute changes were made (including some oversights that we just missed).

Now the book is in their hands. We expect to get it in the New Year and we’ve already planned a release event for January 9th.

It was a long year and things are just getting started. There is a lot more to do in the coming months to bring me to a place where I’ll be happy as a writer. Besides the readings and conventions, more stories, more books, and more editing awaits for me.

But for now, I’m proud to show you the cover of No Light Tomorrow. Sales start January 9th in soft cover and ebook. There will be links to follow, but I hope the cover will entice you to give it a read.

Thanks for all the support this year. I’m looking forward to keep things going next year too. Have a wonderful day wherever you are and whatever you’re celebrating or not!
