Time to make the Donuts

Blog No. 361

giphy-2I bought a game. I know I shouldn’t have, but I was out and about on Sunday and stopped at the store. It was a game I’d been wanting (the first on was quite good) and it was on sale. I spent several hours that night getting used to the new controls (why do game makers do that, anyway? The first game was just fine. Now I have to forget the way it was and learn something new). It was a fun evening of wasted time that capped off my week and a half (and a bit) of sloth after the writing sprint. I was going to finish a short story, but I only had one writing session for it. I’m probably half way there (or more) so I’ll keep picking away at it, but it’s time to face the dreaded edits. Continue reading “Time to make the Donuts”

Like a Circle

Blog No. 360

giphyBecause this is the 360th post. Like a circle. Get it? (I know you probably do. Ignore me. I think I’m funny). Now that Broadcast Wasteland is written (and all the editing and other work is ahead of me) I’m really not sure what this post is going to be about. We’re going on another journey together! Last weekend was Advanced Polls in Canada and my Day Job was a polling location. I usually dread it because the poll clerks aren’t always with it, the people who come in are often angry, and I get caught in circular arguments where voters scream political opinions and racist comments at me (all the while I do my best to keep my cool and remind them that you aren’t really allowed to talk about politics at a polling site, also racism is bad). It was four days of early mornings and monotonous hours, but it turned out the clerks were good and I only had one racist comment throw in my direction. Either way, I hadn’t done anything productive since I finished the first draft last Wednesday. Continue reading “Like a Circle”

I Threw My Back Out Dancing

Blog No. 338

20190511_150043I’m officially in a period where the non writing stuff is busier than the writing stuff. Looking at my calendar, this should last at least until the end of the month. That’s not to say that I won’t get any writing done. I did a good (or okay I think) 1800 words on Monday. That said, I don’t have another free day until next Monday. I rely on my scheduled writing sessions to make progress, and without those, I slip farther and farther behind. I didn’t get any done last weekend because a friend of mine had a wedding, and I was graciously invited. The best part was that I got to see a bunch of folks who I hadn’t seen since a wedding a year ago (including the groom). It was a blast from the past with Arvin coming in on the Friday night (really Saturday early morning) the wedding on the Saturday, and recovering until a mother’s day pizza dinner on Sunday (which was nice, as dinner with my folks always is). Up-Up-and an Update

Blog No. 336

20190427_133939Welcome to May. I’m not sure how we got here, or what I’ve been doing for the first four months of the year, but here we are. Somehow, things have happened. The Neon Heart is out and thanks to being able to meet up with Christian and Elly, I’ve gotten some of the first draft of the novel done too (thought I’m not sure what it’s going to be, yet). I’ve had a bunch of events, but the usual onslaught that starts in March and runs through June, didn’t happen. I did have a busy April, but March was light, and so far, the rest of my year is the usual one or two events a month. I’m not complaining, but events usually means book sales. Still, I am plenty busy and the more time I can spend writing, the better. I suppose, like most things, it’s a balancing act. Continue reading “Up-Up-and an Update”

The Neon Heart – Release

Blog No. 333

20190408_135528

The Neon Heart is out! It’s official, it’s available, and it has a very loud cover. The book took me a lot longer to finish than I had hoped. It is a lot longer than I had planned too, though. The initial idea for the series was to capture the crowd that wants to read, but doesn’t have a lot of time. I got a lot of good feedback from people who bought No Light Tomorrow just to be nice, but ended up finding it approachable and really liked it. I figured, why not make a fun, fast paced book, at a non-intimidating length? They’ll eat it up. They did not. The Thinking Machine sold okay, but it did not have the monster sales I had hoped. It was, however, a new book that I could bring to events and advertise. For The Neon Heart, I changed gears a little. I listened to the feedback from the people who did buy the last one. Thinking Machine was too short and felt rushed. They loved the format, though. With that in mind, I let the story in Neon Heart drive the size. Now I have a book two in the Novella Series and it is the best thing I’ve ever written. Continue reading “The Neon Heart – Release”

Off the Top Rope

Blog No. 331

20190323_213357_hdrYou know when you go to the doctor and they ask you about your drinking habits? How many drinks do you have in a week, sort of thing? (Once, my doctor told me that he was taught to triple whatever his patients tell him). I never know how to properly answer that one. It varies so wildly that I have to look at months in order to get an average. I can go for three months without having a drink, but if a friend is in town (maybe one from Owen Sound) that number could be six beers plus a-pitcher-and-a-half in two days. Add to those drinks, two late nights, and things get groggy. Don’t think that I was only out drinking, though. My good friend from my video store days had tickets to wresting and invited me along. It was a first for me, but it was a good time. Those wrestler folks do some crazy acrobatics. It’s certainly fun to watch. Continue reading “Off the Top Rope”

The Final Sprint & The Penultimate Stumble

Blog No. 330

img_20170409_135109_312You’re reading this on Thursday (or maybe not, but it’s posted on Thursday). That means tomorrow is the day I’m supposed to get The Neon Heart to the printer in a desperate attempt to get good copies in my hand for April 14th for the Sarnia Pop Culture Show. I say good because so far every first printing I’ve done with IngramSpark has had issues. Everything from falling apart in my hand to having the interior text shifted into the gutter. For some reason, everything after that first print run has been good (for the most part). Three weeks isn’t the best amount of time to leave for the setup, printing, and shipping, but my timetable was moved forward since I’m not going to Shock Stock this year (as I’ve said). The problem is, now I won’t be ready to even submit my final setup to the printer tomorrow. Continue reading “The Final Sprint & The Penultimate Stumble”

Let’s Do an Update

Blog No. 328

b82928d729f43f461be1de52451c79348c3b15872f37d1f0915b06fccab0e9d7It’s March. Like, already. Every year things move ever faster towards the inevitable. But until then, let’s talk about what’s going on with my various projects. The obvious one is The Neon Heart, but there’s a novel in there, various events, Flags and High Fives, my progress towards ebooks, the day job, and probably something else. (I’m sure I’ll come up with more as I write this). We also seem to be in the middle of another cold snap (at least when the sun isn’t out). I’m not going to say that that has a huge impact on my writing and all those other things, but I’m not going to say it doesn’t. Enough delays (I suppose) time to get to the nitty-gritty. February: The Busiest Month?

Blog No. 326

mark-twainSo far, February has been a blur of activity, work, and circumstances. Unexpectedly, it may end up being the busiest month I have this year. I thought April would be a shoo-in, but I may end up not going to Shock Stock (they may not have the room). I still have two other events that month, but neither of them is overnight. The Neon Heart is due in April as well, but since I am currently working on that right now (furiously) I don’t think I will be any more busy with it. (Famous last words, perhaps?). I do hope to get a first (and maybe second) draft of a novel done this year, but while that will be a ton of work, it will be spread out over months. I could end up having some absolutely monstrous months head, but for now, February has completely taken me by surprise. Continue reading “February: The Busiest Month?”

It Begins… Event-a-Palooza 2019

Blog No. 324

20190203_142552I’ve already had a workshop this year (thanks to Vanessa over at Gertrude’s Writing Room) and I’ve even had an interview (also thanks to Vanessa and the good folks at Scribes and Songsters). I’ have yet to have a traditional event such as a convention or reading. All that is about to change—starting this weekend. I’m heading up to Guelph with Christian for GenreCon. I haven’t been to Guelph since a couple of my friends were living there. I went up for St. Patrick’s Day and had a wonderful time. That was years ago now. I have been as close as Kitchener for book related stuff, but this will be a new city for an event. Hopefully it’s going to be a good one. Continue reading “It Begins… Event-a-Palooza 2019”
