Blog No. 378

borderlands-2-ultimate-edition-ps3-d_nq_np_655024-mlm28152090773_092018-fI’ve been picking away at small things while waiting for people to get back to me with the beta reads for Broadcast Wasteland. I did a layout for Christian’s re-release of The Space Between Houses (it only took me half-a-dozen tries), I wrote a chapter of a new potential project (nothing I’d be willing to talk about any time soon), and I sorted through all the ongoing and on-hold projects that have been kicking around. I even reorganized the file where I keep all my writing stuff on the computer. Basically, mostly busy work. I also have had busy weekends at the day job, but I think I’m going to steer clear of that subject for now. What I want to talk about is playing video games with my brother. 300th Post!

Blog No. 300

300There are a few topics I’m going to get to with this post, but, while they are exciting and cool things, the biggest news is that this is the 300th post on this blog. Technically started in 2010 (around the end of the WLTP era) the regular weekly posts didn’t take hold until January of 2013 at post number 10. That’s 290 posts in five years (one week at a time). I’m pretty happy with that progress. It’s not the most amazing accomplishment, but I did it and there it is. I’m not sure how many words this whole blog is up to at this point, but last I checked I was passing 250 000, so I’m above that watermark at this point. I could do some simple math and come up with an average post length, but I don’t care, so I’m going to move on and talk about other stuff. If you’ve been following this blog for any length of time, thanks for sticking with it. Continue reading “300th Post!”

Further than Last Year

Blog No. 202

goldimouse2I managed to make it all the way to October before bemoaning not having anything to write about. There was that one bit in the summer, but it was part of the intro where I did come up with a topic. This week, I feel like I’ve actually got nothing. Which is strange, because it’s not like I’ve been in a hole for a week. There are certainly times when I get overwhelmed and spend my evenings searching through Kodi for old movies I forgot about. Nothing happens those weeks (other than stuff my my fave with too much junk food and the movie watching). Surprisingly, while that used to be the way I lived (though with network TV) those weeks are getting farther apart. There always seems to be something going on in my life now. The Loss of Routine

Blog No. 192

calvinmotivates-930x300The struggle continues and I’ve been given another reminder of how important routines are. Naturally, I am a person drawn to routines, so it’s no wonder that the more structured my time, the more I get done, especially with writing. I’ve heard other writers balk at the idea, and even argue against daily writing habits. While no one thing is ever right for everyone, I think most people can agree that a schedule and consistency tend to help when it comes to making progress (writing being just one example). It’s the same thing all over my life. I’ve kept up with going to my boxing class, but the extra work has been interrupted. Even my reading suffers from a lack of consistency, and I love reading. It’s just so easy to waste a few hours on the internet, or play another video game with my brother. Continue reading “The Loss of Routine”

Manly or Progress

Blog No. 190

13620959_10153952836757293_5930181575599118072_nFor the last few years I’ve been living at my brother’s house. It’s a mutually beneficial arrangement (usually). He gets someone in the house who can keep an eye on things and help out a bit, and I get a cheap place to stay as I follow my financially ruining dream of becoming a writer. While we have been known to butt heads from time to time (a common thing for brothers). Luckily we happen to be good friends and most of the time we are able to talk out the majority of conflicts. Threats may fly, but blood is thicker than water (even though that saying means something different). Continue reading “Manly or Progress”

Day of Kings

Blog No. 189

13516203_10153743495720983_7085526552815543252_nOver the last few years (around the same time I’ve been working with Adventure Worlds) I’ve had the rare opportunity to see some of my favourite bands live. Due to my extreme age, many of them have since left whatever spotlight they may have had (some of them even haven broken up). Three of the most notable experiences have been seeing Mystery Machine at the FM lounge (now any empty space), going to Hamilton to see the Killjoys play a reunion show on New Year’s Eve, and  now I get to add going to Toronto to see Limblifter. It’s no coincidence that all three bands are Canadian alternative Rock. It’s also no coincidence that I saw all three shows with my musician brother. (Not to mention how awesome all three concerts were). Continue reading “Day of Kings”

Update

Blog No. 180

The other night I was in the car with my brother as he drove us to our weekly class at Boarder City Boxing Club. I made note that I didn’t have anything to write about for this week’s blog. Undeterred, he offered several suggestions that I summarily shot down with little thought.

“Why not write about us boxing?” he asked.

“I’ve already talked about it, besides, we’re not really boxing, just conditioning.”

“We’ve started playing Resident Evil 5. You can talk about that.”

“Sure, but Christian is doing this whole horror videogames thing on his blog and the last one was all Resident Evil.” (christianlaforet.com/2016/04/27/digital-death-part-2/)

“Gee man (paraphrasing). I don’t know then.”

“Meh. Thanks for the help, but I think I’ll just do an update. I’m due for one anyway.” Continue reading “Update”
